The kitchen is often the heart and hub of the home. It’s a place where families gather, friends are entertained, kids do their homework and holidays are spent together. A well-organized kitchen is organized in manner that supports all these activities with minimum chaos and clutter.

Take a look at your kitchen and you’ll notice that you naturally have created zones. You have an area for making coffee, a place where hungry snackers can sneak a treat, and everyday dishes at easy reach.

Kitchens are also notorious for chronic disorganization. We often discover this in the midst of cooking a holiday meal realizing we only have baking powder and not baking SODA!! Or when you look at the nutmeg in your cabinet and could swear you remember using that exact bottle when your now 18 year old was in 3rd grade.

Here’s an easy remedy….create KITCHEN ZONES.

Take a pen and post it notes and walk around your kitchen. Write down each of your naturual zones on a post it note:

  • Cups and glasses
  • Pots and Pans
  • Canned foods
  • Cleaning products
  • Baking sheets
  • Everyday dishes
  • Plastic containers….etc

Place the post it notes on the cabinet door of each current zone.

Now take a step back.

What’s working and not working?

  • Are you always having to cram that drawer shut?
  • Do you need a stepstool to get down items you use everyday?
  • Are you leaving items on the counters because you have no idea where to put them?

Now, write down the activities that you actually do or would like to do more of in your kitchen.

  • Bake
  • Entertain
  • Cook more….or cook healthier meals
  • Have kids make their own lunches
  • Eat together as a family
  • Crafts….paperwork……pay bills….

Stick those notes in the areas where you see you or your family doing such activities. It’s okay if there’s overlap. Keep reading……

The next step….take a deep breath and get ready to PURGE and DECLUTTER some (all) of those zones! I promise you you CAN and SHOULD get rid of what you can and wipe down those spaces. Check expiration dates too!

Group like items together. You’ll find lids, covers, little bits and bobs everywhere. Don’t overthink this. Just put all spoons together….lids…plates and plastic pieces….and on.

Now comes the fun!

Gather your baking sheets, a set of measuring spoons, dry spices, a bottle of vanilla, flour and sugar and you’ve created your BAKING ZONE!

Gathter wine glasses, beer steins, martini glasses and margarita glasses and store together.

Display bottles, an ice bucket, shakers and openers on a tray and you’ve now created an ENTERTAINING ZONE that James Bond would be proud of!

  • Kid Cooking

Use the post it notes to rearrange your zones before moving the items. This gives you an opportunity to measure space and take a step back to see if it will work.

It may take a few tries before finding the right spot.

The possibilities are only limited by your interest. Get creative!

**Quick Tip** Store frequently used items at easy reach. The zones that you only bring out at holidays or special occassions should be stored high or in the back.
